Changes to Passport Application Fees from April 2025

The UK government has announced changes to passport application fees, which are set to take effect from 10 April 2025. These adjustments, proposed by the Home Office and HM Passport Office, are still subject to approval by Parliament.

New Passport Application Fees

Here are the key changes in fees:

Applications from within the UK

  • Standard online application:
    • Adults: £94.50 (up from £88.50)
    • Children: £61.50 (up from £57.50)
  • Postal application:
    • Adults: £107 (up from £100)
    • Children: £74 (up from £69)
  • Premium Service (1-day processing):
    • Adults: £222 (up from £207.50)
    • Children: £189 (up from £176.50)

Applications from Overseas

  • Standard online application:
    • Adults: £108 (up from £101)
    • Children: £70 (up from £65.50)
  • Standard paper application:
    • Adults: £120.50 (up from £112.50)
    • Children: £82.50 (up from £77)

Why the Fee Changes?

The Home Office states that these increases will help ensure that passport services are self-sufficient and do not rely on funding from general taxation. The government does not profit from passport fees; instead, the revenue covers:

  • Processing passport applications
  • Consular services overseas (including support for lost or stolen passports)
  • Operational costs at UK borders

Important Advice for Applicants

Travelers planning to apply for a passport should do so well in advance to avoid any last-minute issues. In 2024, 99.7% of standard UK applications were processed within three weeks, provided no additional information was required.

Keeping Fees Under Review

Passport fees are regularly reviewed in accordance with HM Treasury guidance to ensure they align with operational costs and service improvements.
